Potassium nitrate fertilizer book of abstracts

No summary of all published agricultural research on potassium nitrate (KNO3) in fertigation, foliar spraying or field applications was available, while colleagues often asked for such information.

To meet that need, I co-authored the “Potassium Nitrate Book of Abstracts 2021” with colleagues, followed a year later by the Spanish version “Nitrato de potasio – libro de resúmenes 2022”. It contains the most relevant scientific publications on the importance of selecting the right N and K fertilizers.

The Potassium Nitrate Book of Abstracts contains handy search functions

To make it easier to search for a specific item, the “Potassium Nitrate Book of Abstracts” contains three useful indices:

Comparison of nitrogen forms: nitrate vs ammonium

Several studies presented in the book compare fertilization programs based on nitrate with those based on ammonium and/or urea nitrogen. These concluded that the best results are obtained when nitrate is the predominant nitrogen source in the fertilization program.

Comparison of K-containing fertilizers: potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, potassium chloride

With regard to studies on the selection of K sources (potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, potassium chloride), it was shown that fertilization programs should match the amount of sulphate applied to the sulphate requirement of the crop and exclude chloride-containing fertilizers. This prevents salinization of the root environment of the plant due to an excess of sulphate and chloride salts.
